(Unfortunately, the Retro Kidz were there, still riding his coattails.) This time, he had a live band (I can’t remember their name) who did a great job recreating the old Marley Marl beats while he worked the crowd through his fingers. Before Kane came on, however, they played a clip from this documentary that came out earlier this year:

Everyone was very experimental and there was a lot of stylistic cross-pollination that birthed a grip of new genres: electro, synthpop, new wave, Prince and Rick James incarnations of funk and, of course, rap and the beat box. This Brooklyn band is playing in Boston tonight and I have included one of their 2008 tracks that stands out for me (from their “Pretend to Love” EP) and nicely recreates that dancey synthpop sound. I recommend most any of their work – they are pretty good at bridging a bunch of those early 80s sounds while making it sound fresh and new. April 9: Harpers Ferry in Allston.

I haven’t seen him perform since I was at the Wu show in Ann Arbor in 1994. He is definitely one of the most lyrically versatile of the Clan, but tending more towards the metaphysical than fellow-wordmaster, Ghostface Killah. I have attached what I consider to be one of the best tracks off his debut album. Enjoy, and try to catch GZA on his tour.
