I continue to believe that one of the most creative eras in dance music was the “post-disco” early 80s just as synthesizers were starting to break onto the scene. Everyone was very experimental and there was a lot of stylistic cross-pollination that birthed a grip of new genres: electro, synthpop, new wave, Prince and Rick James incarnations of funk and, of course, rap and the beat box. This Brooklyn band is playing in Boston tonight and I have included one of their 2008 tracks that stands out for me (from their “Pretend to Love” EP) and nicely recreates that dancey synthpop sound. I recommend most any of their work – they are pretty good at bridging a bunch of those early 80s sounds while making it sound fresh and new. April 9: Harpers Ferry in Allston.
