Famously coming onto the scene with Eminem, the pair murdered the track “Scary Movies” back in 1998. Many expected Royce to follow Em’s path to success not just because of their dynamic inter-play, but because this Detroit MC had genuine skills on the mic. Unfortunately, beef between them wound up holding back Royce. Since then, he has bubbled up on a few tracks, most notably on “Boom” with DJ Premier. A few years ago, Royce and Preemo collaborated again on a decent set of mixtapes called “The Bar Exam”. Well, it’s 2009, and Royce is back prepping a new independent album, “Street Hop”, that holds much promise. The lead single is “Shake This”, produced by DJ Premier, and the b-side is straight ill with the metaphors (“Part of Me”), or rather with its literalness. You really can’t go wrong going raw on a David Axelrod loop…
